Hi there,
“Yeah, no” means no. “No, yeah” means yeah. If you’re ever in Toronto, you’re welcome.
Five things to share:
A friend recently made the case that although she used to be anti-social media and not on the platforms, she got on Instagram and it has been a great tool to connect with people and find things to do. She said I should consider it too. I humbly declined, “you know with the whole time spent offline thing,” I teased. But gun-to-my-head, I will never go back to social media. For any reason at all. Nope, nope, nope, which means no. If you are considering getting off social media, definitely no, yeah.
AI Summary: The author shares their experience of quitting social media at age 23, citing it as a significant accomplishment. They describe how endlessly scrolling through others' lives led to feelings of inadequacy, comparison, and dissatisfaction with their own life. Upon leaving social media, they began to appreciate their ordinary existence, acknowledging that everyone is living similar lives, ordinarily beautiful in reality. They also gained a heightened appreciation for interactions and experiences in the physical world.
I’m a goofy gal IRL. I don’t know why my writing is moody and mopey. Speaking of, if you are funny and insightful that is about 90 per cent of the trick to successful socializing; The single best expression of human connection is shared laughter/joy. The remaining 10%? Be hot: Part genetics, part a state of mind. May we all be blessed to accept the things we cannot change and to have the courage to change the things we can. Don’t say time spent offline didn’t put you on game. (I don’t make the rules, I just live by them)
A quote I want to share with you:
What man actually needs is not a tensionless state, but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him.
— Victor Frankl
May we all live in a pursuit of some goal(s) worthy of us.
Snopes: The internet’s go-to source for discerning what is true and what is total nonsense. Or you can just do what I did and choose utter, blissful ignorance: Quit the news altogether. (Most of it is nonsense!)
A question for you:
Last week 93% of you voted I wrote it better. You are far too kind. ♡
P.s. A sneak peak into heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.p.s. If you ever wonder who’s the genius behind this tiny, wonderful corner of the internet
That’s all for this week!
Thank you for reading. If you like time spent offline, the Substack newsletter, please consider spending more time offline.
time spent offline is now a monthly analog publication you can get delivered straight to your mailbox with 20 ideas every month.
Until next time,
Mehret
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Mehret! This part made me go "yes!":
"In reality, even beautiful people are just people; doing the same thing as you— waiting for the train, adding fruits to their baskets, walking down the street. They don’t just exist in a perfect pose in aesthetically pleasing backgrounds."
I didn't answer the poll because I am on social media, but only because I practise extreme minimalism and there's nobody else like me IRL (believe me when I say it, lol). I have minimalist friends, but they are not "extreme" like me. So Facebook has groups, and I'm part of an extreme minimalism group there, which for me is a haven amidst this chaotic, consumeristic, filled-with-things society. But other than Facebook, I do not use social media - not IG, X, TikTok, whatever else.
I've been off of social media for 3 months now and I cant say enough about how well I've been doing. But i find myself fighting the urge to re-download cause I feel like I'm missing something.
Then I remember that through all the years I have been on it , nothing has really happened.
