Hi there,
Today’s my birthday! I turned 30.
Although my life has changed a million times over in the past 3+ years I have been writing to you, this tiny corner of the internet has remained my most consistent, life-affirming, joyful practice. I write to not feel alone, and in reading I hope you feel less alone on this journey too.
And today, because it is my birthday, and because I have sent 174 emails to you— Mostly to read, some to delete— I am asking for a small favour, count it as a token of your appreciation for this tiny corner of the internet and email me so I know it’s real.
So I know these weekly emails reach you in some real, practical, important ways. Maybe not, maybe it reaches you in a completely different way, and I want to know.
How has time spent offline changed, challenged, transformed you? The Substack newsletter, yes, but also your time spent offline journey. Why are you choosing this instead of that? When that is far easier— Far easier to scroll than to roll with reality.
What has time spent offline done for you?
For me, time spent offline has completely, totally, wholly has changed, challenged, transformed my life for the absolute best. Writing to you, yes, but also rolling with reality. There is no going back now, nothing to go back to: Here to stay— Happily, joyfully, wholly affirmed that I have made the right choice for my life, I’ve made the perfect decision.
Your turn. I want to hear your time spent offline story. What has time spent offline done for you?
Hit reply to this email or leave a comment.
P.s. Also accepting birthday wishes, a <3, advice, a smile, or whatever else you got to share today.
With so much gratitude for this tiny corner of the internet, and
Until next time,
Mehret
Hi Mehret - Spending time offline has helped my insomnia (I am kicking the habit of scrolling my phone before bed). I haven't been meaningfully offline for very long, but deactivating my Facebook was a start. Already, I felt as if I had had a brain cleanse. I also deactivated a popular IG account I had in favour of a quiet one with few followers. It eliminated the compunction to check my phone and dramatically reduced scrolling time. I could still do better, it is a work in progress weaning myself off screens, but feels great so far. I do love Substack, both participating in and creating my own content. Being active, rather than passive online, that is, only going online when I have truly put a lot of effort into something makes a huge difference. Your posts are a big help! Thank you! All the tips are amazing. And belated happy birthday! xx
Happy belated birthday! It's funny, how a very "online" thing, like your posts, make me want to make more time for time spent offline. :)
