Why we can’t look away from our screens

A better alternative 👩🏾‍🍳

Hi there,

Oops, it’s not Tuesday. I couldn’t resist but share a post-sickness-induced rant on why we can’t look away from our screens.

Below are five things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. Everyone and everything is online, and there’s an app for that. These apps live rent free in our pockets 24/7/365. Irresistible technologies and why we can’t look away from our screens.

  2. When I was younger, circa 2009-13, I used to watch music videos for hours on end. Not as background noise, not while scrolling through social media, but fully immersed and entertained. It was the highlight of my days. It took months before I got tired of the stuff I loved. Let’s bring slow media consumption back.

  3. A quote I want to share with you this week:

    “To live happily, live hidden.”

It’s very easy to live hidden. Go offline and not only are you hidden, you’re practically dead.

  4. Has dopamine got us hooked on tech? The answer might surprise you. Also, Dopamine Labs is a California startup that promises to significantly increase the rate at which people use apps by using machine learning to build habitual- and addictive- behaviour: Ew.

  5. A question for you this week: What has worked for you to resist irresistible technologies? (Do more of that!)

    Feel free to share.

That’s all for this week!

Thank you for reading, and please share with anyone you think may benefit.
