men lie, women lie, numbers…

Hi there,

Reality > screen time.

Below are five things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. If three years of living without social media has taught me anything it’s that I like it like that. My Instagram is scheduled for deletion thirty days from today! If you’ve been thinking about deleting social media- oops, sorry I meant metaverse, let’s do it together! By together I mean in spirit.

  2. Quit social media is a 13-minute video from Cal Newport, the man who never signed up for Facebook, and never got on the social media train. It inspired me to delete social media back in 2017.

  3. A quote I want to share with you this week:

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
    — Mary Oliver

    Not mindless scrolling.

  4. You are most likely a cyborg and you don’t even know it.

    Do you have a smartphone?

    You’re a cyborg.

Do you use a computer? Or the web?

    Cyborg!

More generally, if you use digital and networked technology today, you are a cyborg. Slavery 2.0 and how to avoid it: a practical guide for cyborgs

  5. A question for you this week: See #3

P.s. If you’re looking for accountability partners, check out The Intentional Technology Moai! It’s a free 30-day group accountability program designed to get you to use technology more intentionally. It’s not specific to quitting social media but it’s a great way to keep yourself accountable for the thirty-day grace period most social media platforms give you before deleting your account.

That’s all for this week!

At the beginning of this year, if anyone would have told me I would be back on LinkedIn, let alone enjoying it, I'd say they were drunk, high, or a combination of the two. Alas, here I am.

Not that I think social media is inherently, or even largely, good. Rather, I am seeing if one can find the benefits to social media, especially in regards to a career change, it's worth finding out what that looks like. However, when it comes to Facebook, Instagram, and such? I think there's too much collateral damage, so to speak, to make my time on there worthwhile.
